T8 or T5, tube or complete batten, and what to ask before changing an office or shop over to LED.
Ask us a questionThe number after the T is the tube diameter in eighths of an inch: a T8 is about 26 mm across and a T5 about 16 mm. They use different holders, so check the old tube before ordering. Bring it in or send a photo of the printed code on the glass.
T8 tubes are 26 mm across; T5 tubes are 16 mm. They are not interchangeable.
Many LED T8 tubes are wired for mains directly to the tube ends, which means the old ballast and starter are bypassed. That job should be done by a qualified electrician. If the old fitting is rusty or yellowed, a complete LED batten, a T8 casing with tubes, or a 600 x 600 mm panel for a ceiling grid is usually the cleaner choice.
Length matters: 2 ft (about 600 mm) and 4 ft (about 1,200 mm) are the common sizes.
For offices, classrooms and shops, 4000K neutral white or 6500K daylight are the usual choices. Compare tubes by lumens on the datasheet. For dusty or damp areas such as car parks and factories, look at anti-corrosive or IP65 weatherproof fittings.
Some LED tubes need the old ballast or starter removed. Have an electrician rewire the fitting.
A complete LED batten or panel is often simpler than converting an old fitting.
