01The plug and socket

Malaysian homes use the 13A square three-pin socket. Many come switched, and some include USB or USB-C charging ports. For heavy appliances such as water heaters and air conditioners, your electrician will use a dedicated outlet or isolator of the right rating.

02Gang and way

A 1-gang plate has one switch, a 3-gang plate has three. A 2-way switch is used in pairs so that a light can be turned on and off from two places, for example at the top and bottom of the stairs.

“Gang” is the number of switches on one plate; “way” means a switch that works with another for two-point control.

03Series and finish

Each brand sells switch series in several finishes, such as white, black, grey and gold. Choose one series for the whole room or house so plates, sockets and blanks match. Visit the counter to see the sample boards.

04Approval and installation

Wiring accessories sold in Malaysia should carry the approval marks required for them, such as SIRIM and the Energy Commission (ST) label. Where a maker prints these marks on its datasheet, we list them on the product page. Fixed wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
