How to choose downlights and spotlights

When you replace an old downlight, the new one must fit the existing hole. Take the old fitting down and measure the hole across, in millimetres. Common sizes run from about 75 mm to 200 mm. Datasheets on our product pages give the cut-out for each model where the maker prints it.

A recessed or surface downlight with a wide beam lights the room evenly. Eyeball spotlights tilt, so you can aim them at a painting or a feature wall. Track and magnetic track lights slide along a rail and suit shops, galleries and kitchens where the layout may change.

Use one colour temperature per room so the light looks even. As a starting point for a standard 2.7 to 3 m ceiling, many installers space downlights roughly 1 to 1.5 m apart; your electrician will adjust this for the room. Higher wattage gives more light but also more glare, so more lower-wattage lights often look better than a few strong ones.

In bathrooms and outdoor eaves, choose fittings with an IP rating that suits the spot (IP44 or higher is common for splashes, IP65 for areas hit by rain). Have a qualified electrician install lighting in wet areas.
