Solar lights: what to check before you buy

Look past the headline wattage: the panel, the battery and the lumen figure decide how a solar light performs.

01Read the datasheet, not the box

Solar lights are often named by a large wattage figure that does not describe the light they give. The useful figures are the solar panel size, the battery capacity and the lumen output, where the maker states them. Our product pages show what each maker prints on its datasheet.

Prestige 10W Solar Spike Light
Key point

The big wattage in a solar light's name is not the same as the light output. Compare lumens and the battery.

02Sun and placement

The panel needs direct sunlight. Shade from trees, roofs and walls cuts the charge, and several cloudy days in a row shorten the night's run time. Models with a separate panel on a cable let you put the panel in the sun and the lamp where you need light.

Megaman LED Solar Floodlight ZDLS3016
Key point

A larger panel and battery give longer, brighter nights.

03Weather rating and modes

Choose IP65 or higher for open-air use. Many solar lights offer a motion sensor or timed modes that save battery for later in the night, and some come with a remote control.

Prestige PC Solar Floodlight 100W-200W-300W
Key point

Mount the panel where it gets direct sun for most of the day.

Outdoors, look for IP65 or higher.

This guide is general advice. Fixed wiring and distribution board work should be done by a qualified electrician.
